Sleep Disorders

Why St. Mary’s Health System

At the St. Mary’s Health System Center for Sleep Disorders, an American Academy of Sleep Medicine accredited facility, we know that poor sleeping can make life difficult. That’s why we make diagnosing and treating sleep disorders as easy as possible. We offer quick appointments, convenient scheduling, a dedicated team of providers and even home sleep studies. Everyone deserves a great night’s sleep.

Did you know that approximately 70 million Americans suffer from sleep disorders? These disorders can adversely affect concentration, memory, mood, judgement and appetite.

One of the most common adult sleep disorders is Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Untreated it increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes and abnormal heart rhythms.

At St. Mary’s Health System, we diagnose and treat dozens of different sleep disorders. They include narcolepsy, daytime drowsiness and restless leg syndrome. We also offer CPAP testing and mask fitting.

We’re dedicated to helping everyone in the Androscoggin County the rest they need and deserve. If you’re experiencing trouble sleeping, schedule an appointment today.

To diagnose certain sleep disorders, an in-person overnight sleep study may be required. We go to great lengths to make sure this experience is as comfortable as possible for you. You’ll be fitted with sensors and sleep in a private room with a queen size bed while a technologist monitors and records data from a separate room.

Some tests for Obstructive Sleep Apnea may be performed from the privacy of your own home. You’ll have an appointment with a sleep technologist to learn how to use the mobile recording device. Then, you will sleep in your own bed, wearing a few sensors, before returning the recording device the next day. Our technologist will examine the results and your provider will reach out to you with a diagnosis.

Are you struggling with sleep problems? A virtual visit to our sleep lab may be just what you need! During your virtual visit, our sleep specialists will conduct a thorough evaluation of your sleep history and symptoms to determine the underlying cause of your sleep issues. We will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that fits your unique needs and lifestyle.

Virtual visits are done at the discretion of the provider, and are done over a secure connection.

  • We request that initial visits be done in person. If this is not possible, and if insurance allows, a video visit may be arranged.
  • Virtual visits may be available for adults and children older than age 5. If a child is being evaluated,  both the child and a parent or legal guardian must be present during the entire visit.
  • You must be physically present in Maine during your virtual visit.
  • Please choose a private room for your visit so that noise and distractions are limited. Please be comfortably seated for your visit. It is recommended that you have a strong internet connection and that you restart your device prior to your visit.

Please note that due to high volume, driver’s license forms for Sleep Apnea for the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) are now reviewed by in-person appointment only.

Patients should make sure their forms are reviewed at least 60 days before their license is set to expire. It is the patients’ responsibility to keep track of when their form is due.

Patients must obtain a physical copy of their compliance data from their Durable Medical Equipment company prior to their appointment. It is recommended that patients do this at least 2 weeks before their appointment at the Center for Sleep Disorders. If compliance data is not available at the time of the office visit appointment, then the BMV form cannot be filled out.

It is recommended that you bring your machine’s data card to all of your follow-up appointment– even if your machine has a modem. Modems do not always function and therefore your data may not be available if you solely rely on that.

Urgent appts cannot be accommodated due to high volume of appointments for clinical issues. If you feel that your form needs to be filled out urgently, you may discuss with your primary care provider.

Patients will be responsible for making sure that the Bureau of Motor Vehicles receives their signed form.

Patients should call the Bureau of Motor Vehicles to make sure that their forms have been received once signed by the Center for Sleep Disorders. (Call 207-624-9000, extension 52124, for the Medical Review section.) The Center for Sleep Disorders will not mail or fax the form for patients.

If you are not seen in the Center for Sleep for 2 years, your chart will be closed. You will need to discuss completion of BMV paperwork with your Primary Care Provider. New Patient appts will not be made for the express purpose of filling out BMV paperwork if there are no other clinical issues that need to be addressed.

Compliance requirements for use of positive airway pressure devices can be found on the website for the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (https://www.maine.gov/sos/bmv/licenses/OBSTRUCTIVE%20SLEEP%20APNEA.pdf).

Patients who have straightforward sleep apnea and no other active sleep issues and are using CPAP or BiPAP on a consistent basis will be transferred back to primary care. You will then need to discuss your BMV paperwork with your primary care provider. We do not have the capacity in our clinic to see stable sleep apnea patients only to fill out paperwork.
