St. Mary’s Health System Earns Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation

St. Mary’s Health System is proud to announce that its Emergency Department has earned Level 3 Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation from the American College of Emergency Physicians. This national designation recognizes hospitals that provide high-quality, well-coordinated emergency care tailored specifically to older adults.

The GEDA program, supported by The Gary and Mary West Health Institute and The John A. Hartford Foundation, sets rigorous standards for geriatric emergency care. St. Mary’s achieved the bronze standard accreditation by meeting key benchmarks in patient safety, staff training, age-appropriate equipment and screening for common geriatric conditions such as delirium, dementia and fall risk.

The achievement was made possible through the leadership of Micah Gaspary, MD, emergency department medical director, and Kelley Parker, RN, along with a dedicated team of clinicians and staff. Their efforts ensure that older patients in the Lewiston-Auburn area receive thoughtful, evidence-based care when they need it most.

“Receiving this recognition is an important milestone for St. Mary’s Health System and the community we serve,” said Win Brown, FACHE, President of St. Mary’s Health System. “It reflects our ongoing commitment to deliver excellent care for every patient, especially our older adults who deserve dignity, respect and compassion.”

St. Mary’s Emergency Department is open 24/7 and provides a full range of emergency care services close to home. This accreditation builds on national geriatric emergency care guidelines developed in partnership with the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, Emergency Nurses Association and American Geriatrics Society.
