Why Mission Matters

Wellness

With Wayne Carmello-Harper, Vice President of Mission Integration, Covenant Health

In Catholic nonprofit healthcare, mission matters because the healing ministry anchors the care we provide and the work we do. We believe we are called to serve and we focus on being sure our values are part of everything we do.

We are grounded in:

Compassion
We show respect, caring and sensitivity toward all, honoring the dignity of each person, especially the poor, vulnerable and suffering.

Integrity
We promote justice and ethical behavior and responsibly steward our human, financial and environmental resources.

Collaboration
We work in partnership, dialogue and shared purpose to create healthy communities.

Excellence
We deliver all services with the highest level of quality while seeking creative innovation.

What is special about our health system is that each of our New England based hospitals St. Joseph Healthcare in Bangor Maine, St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua New Hampshire and St. Mary’s Health System in Lewiston Maine live the same mission of providing healing and care in service to all in our communities.

This mission is not just a statement. It is at the heart of caring for the whole patient, a unity of body mind and spirit. Mission matters because it reminds us that healthcare is not only a profession. It is a calling. It shapes how we treat patients, support families and make good decisions.

In my role I ensure our mission matters not only in our chapels, but also during bedside conversations, in boardroom meetings and throughout our hospital campuses. When employees feel connected to meaning and purpose, the care they provide is elevated. It also includes care you may not see, carried out by many staff members who are not at the bedside yet just as dedicated to your safety and well-being.

At Covenant Health, our mission is our promise. We know that matters to you.
